How to Have a Healthy Beach Day

The temperature outside keeps rising, the days are getting brighter, and school is out for summer; it is officially summertime, folks! Time for barbecues with the family, tubing at the lake, late-night ice cream runs with old pals, and, best of all, beach trips. Although beach days are filled with many opportunities for enjoyment, it is critical to approach the day in a healthful manner.

Step One: WEAR SUNSCREEN. Not only is treating the inside of our body, the outside needs the same amount of care. Wearing SPF while outdoors is important in protecting your skin from harsh radiation inflicted by the sun. Sunscreen protects the body from sunburns that could lead to skin cancer development later on in life. Don’t forget to reapply!

Step Two: Pack a healthy lunch with snacks! Boardwalk food can be expensive and, more importantly, unhealthy. By bringing your own food, you avoid spending money and eating greasy, junk food. 

Step Three: Put the phone away & enjoy the waves! Give your brain a break from technology/social media and allow your mind to relax. Stimulate your brain through different means. 

Step Four: Bring a book! If you are looking for some healthy entertainment during a long beach day, reading a novel improves your brain connectivity, vocabulary, and comprehension. Books provide an intellectual stimulus that provides more  benefits for the mind than scrolling through social media. 

Following these four steps during a beach day maximizes your health and gives your body the care it needs/deserves. While it is important to treat our bodies with care during summer days in the sun (and at all times), do not forget to relinquish and eat that big vanilla sundae with extra hot fudge and rainbow sprinkles. A crucial aspect of health? Allowing imperfection. If you forget to apply that extra sunscreen or share greasy, cheese fries with your friends, do not be too hard on yourself. Enjoy those fries and the time with your loved ones; you can hop back on track tomorrow.
