Time to Hit the Slopes! Why Skiing Should Become Your Go-To Winter Activity

Skiing has been a passion of mine for most of my life. My parents signed me up for ski school at the ripe age of four and I’ve been in love with the sport ever since. Once you get past the pizza and french fries stage, the thrill you experience on the slopes is addicting. For many, skiing allows them to travel somewhere new, challenge themselves, and is good for bonding with friends and family, but also gives you the opportunity to meet new people.

Once you get the hang of skiing, this sport is not only super fun but also linked to many health benefits.

Physical health benefits:

  1. Improves cardiovascular endurance and health
  2. Improves balance and core strength
  3. Strengthens leg and lower body muscles
  4. Good for bones and joints
  5. Increases flexibility
  6. Can help with weight loss
  7. Increases vitamin D intake

Mental health benefits:

  1. Enhances and improves your mood
  2. Improves proprioception
  3. Contributes to a greater sense of spatial awareness
  4. Linked to better sleep
  5. Improves concentration and cognitive capacity

And there couldn’t be a better time to pick up this new sport, as skiing is a fun activity. This sport is incredible because the ski areas consist of hundreds of acres of open space for people to enjoy the slopes. As a ski shop employee, I can tell you first hand that this season has been an epic one. Good snow all around the country and, while I can’t speak for all shops, mine had a record breaking number of rentals this season. If you have the opportunity, I highly encourage you to get out on the slopes during the season.
